Gabe Kidd was one of the featured performers in New Japan Pro-Wrestling's G1 Climax 35 as part of the B Block, but the reigning IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion sustained an injury in his first match of the tournament against Konosuke Takeshita.

Gabe Kidd has since withdrawn from the G1 and forfeited all of his block matches. This ultimately affects New Japan's original plans for the round-robin tournament, particularly in determining the final standings. NJPW sources noted to Fightful Select, however, that they don't believe Kidd was set to advance to the semi-finals, which made changing plans easier.

The initial fear within New Japan was that Gabe Kidd had sustained a torn MCL, but he ultimately was diagnosed with a hyperextension. NJPW still decided it was for the best for Kidd to be removed from the G1.

Gabe Kidd has performed across New Japan Pro-Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling in recent months, being brought in by AEW to be associated with the Death Riders following PAC's injury, to the extent that Kidd made his AEW return in a Newcastle United hoodie.

NJPW G1 Climax 35 will see the winners of the A and B blocks advance to the semi-finals. They will face the winners of play-off matches between the second and third place finishers in each block. The final of NJPW G1 Climax 35 will be held on August 17.
