TNA Wrestling presented one of the biggest shows in the promotion's history on Sunday, July 20 when 7,623 fans were in attendance for Slammiversary at Long Island, New York’s UBS Arena.
The fans didn't leave the show happy, however, as predictions heading into the pay-per-view suggested Mike Santana would win the three-way main event against Trick Williams and Joe Hendry to become TNA World Champion. That isn't what happened, though, and Trick Williams ultimately stole the win from Santana to record the successful title defence.
WWE NXT's dominance over TNA was only further compounded earlier at Slammiversary as Jacy Jayne defeated Masha Slamovich to capture the TNA Knockouts World Championship, with two of TNA's top titles now held by WWE wrestlers.
TNA Slammiversary immediately received a backlash from fans on social media and the show currently has a 3.73/10 rating on Cagematch. TNA President Carlos Silva addressed how he would respond to fans who were left disappointed by Slammiversary while appearing on Battleground.
"How do you respond? You respond that I understand and I get it. If you saw the look on my face, that's all part of wrestling. There were some great payoffs at Slammiversary with Leon (Slater) and there are going to be some great payoffs as we build again to Bound for Glory. These are the paths that happen as you build these matchups. For the fans, I guess what I would say is, I'm glad the fans are talking about it. That means we matter and they care. We care and we're going to keep growing it together," Silva stated.
Silva is currently leading the efforts to secure a new United States TV deal for TNA, and A&E is reportedly the frontrunner for any new media rights arrangement.
