After weeks of teases of a possible alliance, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss officially began teaming together on the July 4 episode of Friday Night SmackDown. The two former women's champions have continued to grow closer on WWE TV in the weeks since then, and they will challenge for the WWE Women's Tag Team Titles for a second time at SummerSlam.
According to Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer, Flair and Bliss were originally only planned to team together on a short-term basis ahead of facing each other in a singles match at SummerSlam. WWE ultimately decided not to split Flair and Bliss, however, after Charlotte asked for the company to keep the team together.
The tag team of Flair and Bliss has been popular on WWE TV and Charlotte received cheers at Evolution during the WWE Women's Tag Team Title match, only days after her Player's Tribune article was published.
Flair noted while on the red carpet for the ESPYs that the chants made her feel special.
"Literally, when they started chanting 'We want Charlotte,' I did a, 'Y'all chanting for me?' I was like, don’t tear up on the apron, you have to run a comeback. They made my night. They made my year. They made me feel heard and seen," Flair said.
"It's been a hard year, and my comeback didn't come back the way I thought it would, especially since all I thought about the whole time I was gone was returning. So to hear that ovation and feel the passion for me, it meant everything to me. People forget that the Queen is human. And that the Queen has good days, bad days, and under all that armour and glitter and shine and sparkle, there's still this little girl that can't believe she made it, that still works hard, that still wants to achieve goals and dreams. I felt special. They really made me feel special that night as a performer."
