WWE pre-recorded the upcoming July 3 episode of SmackDown on June 29 in Atlantic City, NJ, setting up a future title programme.
SPOILERS AHEAD
After a shock WWE Championship victory over Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER at Night of Champions on June 27, Sami Zayn addressed the WWE crowd in Atlantic City. However, mid-way through his victory lap Zayn was interrupted by former champion Cody Rhodes, and defeated King of the Ring finalist Jey Uso - both men staking a claim to a title match.
In the night’s main event Rhodes and Uso faced off for a shot at Zayn’s title, with Rhodes emerging victorious. ‘The American nightmare’ won’t have to wait long to challenge Zayn, however, with a WWE Championship match between the two green-lit for the July 10 edition of WWE SmackDown in Oklahoma City.
Zayn’s WWE Championship win was originally planned for WrestleMania 43 in 2027 before being brought forward to Night of Champions. However, rumours suggest that Zayn might not be on top of the mountain for too long, with WRKD Wrestling on X/Twitter advising fans to not ‘get too attached’ with the idea of Zayn as champ.
