Report: Internal Opposition To Sami Zayn Regaining The WWE Title On SmackDown

In a surprise title change in Mexico City, Sami Zayn regained the Undisputed WWE Championship from CM Punk on the September 11 episode of Friday Night SmackDown. This came after an interference-laden match featuring Kevin Owens, Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae, with Zayn picking up the win after he hit Punk with the Undisputed WWE Title while the referee was checking on Gargano before he followed up with a Helluva Kick for the win.

The title change appeared to come out of nowhere but Dave Meltzer has reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that the title switch took place simply due to WWE's storyline plans. That doesn't mean everyone was in favour of the title change, though, and there was reportedly some opposition to Zayn regaining the WWE Championship.

"With the Sami Zayn thing, the basic gist was they have a storyline that will make sense when you look back on it, is what I was told. When it’s all said and done this will all make sense. There was certainly people who were against it but they did it. And that was that," Meltzer said. 

The title switch saw Sami Zayn become a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion. His first reign was only nine days long, with Zayn winning the title at Night of Champions before he dropped the championship to CM Punk on the July 6 episode of Monday Night Raw in Punk's return match.
