After working backstage at recent All Elite Wrestling events, it is being reported that Josh Mathews has signed with AEW, with more about his new role revealed.
Mathews departed TNA Wrestling in February 2025 after 11 years as part of a massive backstage shuffle in the company, with reports in April suggesting he worked backstage at AEW Dynasty.
Per a report from PWInsider, Mathews has been spotted backstage at recent AEW events working in the production trucks, with Mathews reportedly acting as a key liaison between the core production team and the coaches/producers in the arena who help plan and execute matches and segments across AEW TV.
Mathews' experience with wrestling TV production goes back over 20 years, first working for WWE across a number of front-facing broadcast roles from 2002 until 2014, then moving to TNA in 2014, replacing Mike Tenay as lead announcer for the company. Mathews remained TNA/IMPACT lead announcer until 2021 when he transitioned into significant backstage roles, including Senior Producer and Senior Director of Digital Media. Mathews’ wife Madison Rayne works as a backstage coach in AEW, a role she has held since 2022.
