It was announced yesterday following several rumblings that WWE’s WrestleMania 43 event in 2027 would officially be heading to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking the first time ever that WrestleMania would be emanating from outside of North America.
This announcement has sparked controversy and mixed feelings due to previous criticism of WWE’s deal with Saudi Arabia, particularly following the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi just a few weeks before WWE’s 2018 Crown Jewel event. The US State Department issued a report on human rights practices, and as of 2024 there were credible reports of unlawful killings, disappearances, torture, restrictions on trade unions, censorship, and more emanating from the Kingdom.
All of this may very well be why both on the live broadcast and on fan footage captured during last night’s WWE x AAA Worlds Collide event in Las Vegas featured a mass of boos from the audience when a video package aired showcasing WWE’s huge WrestleMania announcement for Saudi Arabia. Chants of, "You Sold Out!" could also be heard. The audience’s unhappiness was seen in various different camera angles of fan footage - something that WWE and TKO won’t be all too happy to see.
It is reported that Saudi Arabia issued a huge sum of around $100 million to bring WrestleMania to the country.
