Zelina Vega picked up the first singles title of her WWE run on April 25, defeating Chelsea Green for the Women’s United States Championship in a shock victory.
Despite being a former Queen’s Crown winner and WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion, the win over Green marks the first singles championship for Vega since joining WWE in 2017. However, a report from PWInsider suggests the title win caught many backstage in WWE off guard, with the win a legitimate surprise to many, with plans of the title switch kept very close to the chest by WWE management.
WWE talent watching backstage were unaware of the planned title switch, with much of the locker room finding out about the title switch as the fans did as the ref counted three.
Originally entering WWE as Andrade’s manager in NXT, Vega was briefly released by WWE in 2020, but since her return has been aligned with the LWO, as well as picking up her aforementioned tournament and championship wins.
After dropping the title, inaugural champion Chelsea Green posted her ‘farewell address’ to X/Twitter, with some interpreting this as the start of a hiatus for Green. Green had previously spoken of her disappointment at being kept off the WWE WrestleMania 41 card.
