Will Ospreay was one of New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s biggest stars prior to his departure in 2024, and Ospreay has revealed why he chose to leave the promotion for AEW.

Appearing on Marking Out with MVP & Wayne Swayze, Ospreay noted how factors backstage informed his decision to leave, with Ospreay saying the following:

“I kind of knew that [2023] was gonna be my last year. There was some things that were happening behind the scenes. I was just over the office. I loved the boys and I loved the fans,” said Ospreay, before noting how his growing family also played a part in his decision “I got a new girlfriend. I became a dad to her kid. So it was just one of these things where I wanted to be present and I wanted to be there more so I knew I needed to go to my next stage of my career.”

Ospreay officially signed with All Elite Wrestling in late 2023 and has gone on to become one of the biggest stars in the promotion. Ospreay noted how working in AEW enables him to still make appearances in NJPW:

“I didn’t wanna cut my ties with Japan,” Ospreay said. “So that’s why AEW was amazing, right?”
