Cody Rhodes did not emerge from his WWE WrestleMania 42 bout with Randy Orton unscathed, with the WWE Champion suffering a nasty looking eye injury at the hands of Orton.
Rhodes’ left eye was visibly closed over and swollen post-match, with the ‘American Nightmare’ having clearly taken a knock to the eye during the bout. A report from PWInsider states that the injury occurred when Rhodes caught a punch from Orton flush to the eye just before the eye-poke spot and RKO to referee Charles Robinson.
There is no word on the severity of the injury, with WWE pulling Rhodes from scheduled appearances and photo opps as part of WWE World on Sunday April 19. WWE acknowledged Rhodes’ injury during the Mania 42 night one post-show, with Pete Rosenberg noting how Rhodes could be in concussion protocol for several days following a post-match punt kick from Orton - although it is unknown if Rhodes being placed in protocol could be due to the eye injury, or just a kayfabe fabrication to sell the post-match attack.
It remains to be seen if Rhodes will appear on either the post-Mania edition of WWE Raw on April 20, or WWE SmackDown later this week.
