The Final Boss looms large over WWE, with The Rock describing his current persona as ‘the greatest heel professional wrestling has seen’.
The Rock made the bold claim during episode four of WWE: Unreal on Netflix, saying the following:
“The Final Boss, the greatest heel professional wrestling has seen. Insurmountable antagonist. There’s nothing The Final Boss can’t do. There’s nothing that The Final Boss can’t say. Becoming this new version has been the most gratifying decision that I’ve ever made.”
Whilst the build to WrestleMania XL saw Rock earn plaudits for his heel antics, his appearances since - or lack thereof - have led to resentment from elements of the WWE fan base, whilst his return in early 2025 reportedly led to some degree of unhappiness within WWE itself.
The evolution of The Final Boss was seemingly a happy accident, with Rock originally slotted in to face Roman Reigns in singles action at WrestleMania XL, until fan protestation and outrage online forced WWE, and The Rock’s hands, with Rock becoming heel for the first time since his Hollywood Rock days in 2003, before his full-time departure from WWE.
