John Cena ended his pro wrestling career at the December 13 episode of WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, tapping out to Gunther after the two-time World Heavyweight Champion had Cena trapped in a chokehold.
There had been talk for months over the possibility of Donald Trump attending Cena's last match due to the show taking place at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. Trump has also attended a number of sports events since being elected as the 47th president of the United States.
The WWE Hall of Famer attended the Army vs. Navy American football game at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday, and WWE wanted Trump to be in attendance for Saturday Night's Main Event, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported. The 79-year-old would have been able to attend Saturday Night's Main Event had he wished to do so, but Trump ultimately decided not to go to the WWE show.
Key figures in the Trump administration did go to Saturday Night's Main Event, including former WWE CEO Linda McMahon, the current United States secretary of education. Project 2025 author and US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick was also in attendance, as was Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
WWE have close ties with the Trump administration, and WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H has stood alongside Trump for the signing of executive orders in 2025.
