John Cena's record-breaking 17th world title reign is over, having dropped the Undisputed WWE Championship back to Cody Rhodes in the main event of SummerSlam 2025.

The main event Street Fight had everything, but Cody ultimately regained the belt after surviving a Super AA and following up with a Cutter through the table, before a salute to Cena and either the fifth or sixth Cross Rhodes of the match for the 1-2-3.

Following the match, John Cena handed Cody Rhodes the WWE Title belt and the two tearful men embraced. They then shook hands, and Cody raised Cena's arm before the new champion headed to the back.

With Cody's win, Cena's reign came to an end after 106 days. Cena defended the title on two occasions, against Randy Orton at Backlash and CM Punk at Night of Champions.

Cena's title loss came after he turned babyface on the go-home episode of SmackDown before SummerSlam, with Rhodes very much working the match as a heel reminiscent of The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8. Both men were firmly the babyfaces post-match, however.
