Cody Rhodes became the Undisputed WWE Champion for the third time in the main event of the March 6 episode of Friday Night SmackDown as Cody defeated Drew McIntyre to regain the belt.

Rhodes regaining the championship wasn't a particular surprise as rumours in the week leading up to the match noted that Cody vs. Randy Orton for the Undisputed WWE Title was the company's new plan for WrestleMania 42. The feeling of inevitability failed to prevent a backlash to the title change, however, as the YouTube video of Cody's title win has received 196,000 dislikes compared to 38,000 likes as of the time of writing.

That negativity hasn't extended to the WWE locker room, though, and WrestleVotes noted on a WrestleVotes Live Q&A that people backstage "aren't displeased" about Cody Rhodes being Undisputed WWE Champion once again.

"No real backlash that we've heard. People backstage aren't displeased that Cody Rhodes is back on top, the guy who's led the company for the last couple of years," WrestleVotes said.

The original plan was for Cody Rhodes to walk into WrestleMania 42 as the challenger, with reports noting a pitch would have seen him challenge Drew McIntyre for the WWE Title inside Hell in a Cell. WWE ultimately decided to pivot from those plans, however.
