A shock title change took place in the main event of All Elite Wrestling's Full Gear pay-per-view as Samoa Joe defeated Hangman Adam Page to become the new AEW World Champion.
Joe picked up the win inside a steel cage after HOOK turned heel and hit Hangman with the AEW World Title. Joe then followed up with a muscle buster for the pinfall victory.
Hangman Page was the heavy favourite to win amongst fans and with the bookies heading into Full Gear, but Samoa Joe's title win wasn't a last-minute change. Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer has reported that Joe's title win had been in the works "for a while."
"They have a plan. I don't know if it's a good plan but they have one because this was not something where Vince McMahon showed up the day of the show and changed the finish. This has been in the works for a while. This was planned for a while, and we'll see where it goes," Alvarez said.
Fightful Select also reported that Samoa Joe's win over Page was the plan at least a number of weeks ago.
Joe's win kicks off his second reign as AEW World Champion. He looks set to continue feuding with Hangman Page, while also reigniting issues with Swerve Strickland following Swerve's return in the closing moments of Full Gear.
