Ilja Dragunov, following plenty of rumours and anticipation, made his All Elite Wrestling debut at the WrestleDream pay-per-view on Saturday, October 17. After a brief appearance from a giant metronome, Dragunov entered the arena to 'Soviet March' from Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, which he used as his entrance theme prior to signing with WWE, and he continued to conduct the crowd while bathed in red light.
Dragunov's debut came after a metronomic tease on the go-home edition of AEW Dynamite/Collision before WrestleDream on October 14 and AEW CEO Tony Khan revealed that the company only found out that Dragunov would be able to debut at WrestleDream after Dynamite was already on the air. Prior to that, any plans for Dragunov were held up by acquiring a US work visa for the Russian-born wrestler.
"Thanks to the process, it can be an unpredictable process of acquiring a visa. It’s something that I wasn’t sure until this Wednesday night, during a live broadcast, that I would be able to bring you. It’s a great surprise, and it’s something that I was so pleased that we were able to do tonight. Some people asked about the timing of the vignette that suggested your arrival at WrestleDream on Wednesday, and then having a second vignette on Friday. There is a lot of unpredictability in wrestling and a beautiful thing that happened for us is, on Wednesday night, in the middle of the show, at two in the morning your time, we got the message that Ilja was going to be able to pick up the visa the next day. We found that out during the live broadcast," Tony Khan stated during the post-WrestleDream media scrum.
"We filmed the vignette just in case you weren't going to be able to come to the PPV, we would start the build for when you were here. Maybe it was going to take another week or two, but it happened ahead of schedule, thankfully."
Ilja Dragunov had previously been a part of WWE until he allowed his contract to expire on August 20. The 33-year-old addressed his WWE departure and AEW signing after WrestleDream, simply noting that if AEW is where the best wrestle then how could he not be a part of the promotion.
