After initially introducing the tournament in the 1980s as a special one-night attraction for a house show, WWE began holding the King of the Ring tournament on its own special pay-per-view along with a range of other matches from 1993.

King of the Ring remained an annual pay-per-view until 2002 and the show was revived as a PPV/PLE in 2024. The tournament itself has sporadically returned, with 2024/2025 being the first time it has taken place in consecutive years since the early 2000s.
