Created following the reintroduction of the brand split between Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown in 2016, the Universal Championship was one of the top titles on WWE TV along with the WWE Championship.
The belt was lated unified with the WWE Title to create the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship and then finally retired in 2025, with WWE backdating the title's deactivation to WrestleMania XL and recognising the wrestler who Cody Rhodes beat at that show as the final champion.
