After 15 years as the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship from 1975 until 1990, one of the top titles in the National Wrestling Alliance became the WCW United States Championship when World Championship Wrestling split from the NWA.
The belt would be one of the premier championships in WCW until 2001 when the promotion was purchased by the World Wrestling Federation. The title was then briefly active in WWE as the WCW United States Championship as part of the Invasion angle until it was unified with the WWF Intercontinental Title at Survivor Series 2001.
