Established in 2005, the New Japan Cup has become the second most important heavyweight tournament in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, with the winner traditionally earning a shot at NJPW's top title.

Winners of the New Japan Cup have challenged for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship since 2021 but previous winners had the choice between the IWGP Heavyweight Title and IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

There have been a whole host of New Japan Cup winners and only one wrestler has won the tournament two years in a row.
