WWE and Spike Dudley (real name Matthew Hyson) are in a trademark battle over Hyson's in-ring name.
Hyson filed to trademark 'Spike Dudley' with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on May 13, 2026, with the trademark set to be used for action figures. The filing was published in the Trademark Official Gazette on August 25, which announces applications for trademarks that have passed an initial examination and been approved. Publication in the gazette also opens a 30-day window where third parties can oppose the trademark, though, and WWE on September 24 filed a request for an extension to file their opposition to Hyson's trademark application. That request was granted by USPTO on September 25.
Matthew Hyson performed as Spike Dudley before he was a part of WWE, wrestling under the name during his run with Extreme Championship Wrestling. Spike used the name during his stint in WWE from 2001 until his release in July 2005, and he continued to perform as Spike Dudley afterwards on the indies, including for his most recent match in December 2023.
For his TNA appearances between 2006 and 2013, Hyson wrestled as Brother Runt. For his involvement in Team 3D's retirement match at TNA Bound for Glory 2025, Spike was identified as both Spike Dudley and Brother Runt, although TNA have been in a working relationship with WWE since May 2024.
Matthew Hyson previously attempted to trademark 'Spike Dudley' for pro wrestling purposes in November 2005 but USPTO rejected the application due to its similarity to WWE's trademark for 'Dudley Boyz' that has been active since 2003 and continues to be active to this day. Hyson abandoned his application in January 2007.
