After speculation in the press, WWE superstar Roman Reigns has been officially cast as Akuma in the upcoming Street Fighter movie.
Reigns has been linked with the project since it was announced, with it rumoured at the time the multi-time WWE Champion would be playing Akuma - a rumour since confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Reigns will join Jason Momoa (Blanka), Noah Centineo (Ken Masters), and Andrew Koji (Ryu), whilst it has also been announced that 50 Cent, Callina Liang, and masked country star Orville Peck have also joined the ensemble cast as Balrog, Chun-Li, and Vega respectively.
Based on the genre defining beat-em-up series developed by Capcom, the upcoming Street Fighter movie will be the third live action cinematic adaptation of the property, following from cult classic Street Fighter (1995) and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li (2009). There was also a live action web series based on Street Fighter called Assassin’s Fist that originally aired in 2014.
The choice of Reigns to portray Akuma has raised some eyebrows from long-time fans of the series, with the ‘Tribal Chief’ set to portray a nigh omnipotent Demon warrior.
