Rey Mysterio Retiring In 2027 Being Discussed Within WWE

Approaching his 52nd birthday, Rey Mysterio continues to be an ageless wonder inside the squared circle, but his in-ring career could be coming to an end.

WrestleVotes on Fightful Select has reported there have been rumblings within WWE about Rey Mysterio retiring in 2027. WWE have discussed how to present Mysterio's final match, although it is unknown when or where his retirement match would take place beyond backstage chatter signalling it would happen next year.

Rey Mysterio has long hinted that his retirement match would feature his son Dominik Mysterio, although Rey noted to The Sun in September 2026 that he would like to share his ring with daughter Aalyah before he hangs up his boots.

"I think going back with Dom, you know, you’ve seen Rocky, Rocky 2, Rocky 3, and you know, maybe you thought that was the ending? And then all of a sudden you get another Rocky. Or the Terminator, whatever it is. Those movies that are legendary and are classics, still to this day you can enjoy. I think that can always happen with Dom and myself. Maybe we thought that was a finale or an ending, but the story is always there. It’s very accessible to knock back on that door and reopen that. So, I mean, yeah, that was my original thought [Dom retiring him] from the moment my son stepped in. It's just it happened so fast," Mysterio stated.

After he retires, Mysterio is planning to continue working in pro wrestling behind the scenes.

"I would love to, in some way or form, stay active in the business somehow. We all know eventually my day is gonna come where, where I’m gonna tap out. It is scary when you think about it. I try not to think about it as much, but I do. What I am doing now is I’m trying to enjoy more of the moment. But yeah, I most definitely would see myself sticking around and helping. Whether it’s helping young talent in any way or form, or as a creative person," Rey added.

Rey Mysterio made his pro wrestling debut in 1989 at 14 years old after being trained by his uncle Rey Misterio. Mysterio was featured prominently in Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide from 1992 to 1996 as Rey Misterio Jr. and he worked several matches for ECW under that name from November 1995 to March 1996.

His AAA and ECW work would lead to the luchador signing with WCW and debuting for the company in June 1996 as Rey Mysterio Jr. He would perform for the promotion until it shuttered in 2001, which included him losing his mask in a Lucha de Apuestas match against Kevin Nash in February 1999.

After WCW shuttered in March of 2001, Mysterio would join WWE in 2002, dropping the Jr. portion of his name due to Vince McMahon's dislike of the term, and wearing a mask once again. He wrestled for the company in his first run until 2015, becoming a multi-time world champion. His second WWE run began in 2018 and he has been with the company ever since.
