Report: Joint WWE NXT Heatwave-AAA Ola De Calor Event Said To Be An Eye-Opener

WWE headed to the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, for a double show on Sunday, August 30, with the shows airing head-to-head with All Elite Wrestling's All In pay-per-view.

The double show saw AAA Ola de Calor get underway at 12 pm ET, with the event airing on FOX in Latin America and YouTube internationally, while WWE NXT Heatwave followed at 3 pm ET on The CW in the United States and Netflix internationally.

Headline matches at the AAA event included Los Perros del Mal vs. the Lucha Bros & Dragon Lee, a four-way for the vacant AAA Latin American Championship, and a contract signing between Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano. NXT Heatwave featured Tony D'Angelo vs. Zilla Fatu vs. Grayson Waller vs. Cruz Montana for the NXT Title, Kendal Grey vs. Kelani Jordan for the NXT Women's Championship, and a Submission Match between Nattie and Jaida Parker, among other matches.

Dave Meltzer has reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that, upon speaking to people within WWE, how the day played out was considered an eye-opener, with many fans leaving after the AAA show.

"I actually heard from people in the building too and they basically told me that, like, in the building the Mexicans were all over and the NXT guys, there was a lot... I heard from even people in the company about that Sunday show. It was an eye-opener, I would say. They put NXT second and they put AAA first thinking that we're in the United States and NXT is bigger than AAA. It was pretty tough. A lot of the audience left after the AAA show. It was like Collision where people are just leaving after the thing. They said maybe half of the people were left for the main event. The Mexicans were all way, way, way, way over than the NXT wrestlers other than Zilla Fatu. They said Zilla Fatu was so over in that building, but nobody else. Not Kendal Grey, not Tony D or Myles Borne or anything like that. Even Nattie, who they figured would be super, super over, and really was not. It was a Mexican audience that came to see lucha libre, and some of them stayed... I was basically told it was all Mexicans in the crowd, and they had a nice crowd," Meltzer said.

Whether or not WWE are planning to run more back-to-back NXT and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide events in the future is unknown, but one joint show on the horizon is WWE x AAA Worlds Collide in Chicago on Saturday, September 26.
