Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide/WWE may need to crown a new AAA Latin American Champion due to the severity of El Hijo del Vikingo's knee injury.

In an update on Vikingo's condition, Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that he had heard Vikingo's injury may be serious.

"I heard, by the way, this weekend that, yeah, it could be serious. That's really too bad because he's had a lot of injuries. An inopportune time," Meltzer said.

Vikingo suffered a knee injury on Tuesday, June 30 while preparing for his match with EK Prosper on that night's episode of NXT from the WWE Performance Center. This resulted in a backstage attack angle where Keanu Carver laid out Vikingo, ruling the AAA Latin American Champion out of action. Vikingo, however, did wrestle on the July 3 episode of Friday Night SmackDown as the show was taped following Raw on June 29, before Vikingo suffered the injury.

El Hijo del Vikingo has suffered from knee issues in the past, sustaining a torn meniscus in February 2024 that kept him out of action for several months until September of that year. Upon his return, Vikingo was re-established as one of AAA's top stars and he reigned as AAA Mega Champion for a second time for 104 days from May to September 2025, when he dropped the belt to Dominik Mysterio.
