Upon the announcement of AEW’s new National Championship, which debuted at the Full Gear 2025 PPV in a Casino Gauntlet match, there were some who spoke up against the gold due to the NWA already having its own National Title with its own extensive lineage. This included the current, reigning NWA National Champion, Mike Mondo. Mondo claimed there was only one true National Champion. With Ricochet winning the gold at Full Gear, he will now have his own claim to make on this.
When it comes to criticism on the NWA front, things haven’t continued to develop following Mondo’s comments. It is noted by Fightful Select that there has apparently been a push from within NWA itself to avoid negative comments regarding the new AEW National Title and “lay off the criticism”. According to these claims, this has come from within NWA rather than it coming from AEW.
It was revealed that following AEW’s introduction of the National Title, Tony Khan spoke with NWA’s Billy Corgan, who gave Khan his blessing when it comes to the name of the gold.
