WWE's current plans would see Drew McIntyre main event WrestleMania for the second time in his career, and for the first time since he defeated Brock Lesnar in the final match of WrestleMania 36.

Dave Meltzer has reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter there are currently two plans on the table for the main event of WrestleMania 42. One of those plans is a three-way between Cody Rhodes, Jacob Fatu, and Drew McIntyre for the Undisputed WWE Title. The other match on the table, however, would see Jacob Fatu omitted in place of a singles match of Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre for the Undisputed WWE Championship.

WWE's original plans called for Roman Reigns to face Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Title in the final match of WrestleMania 42, but that match was scrapped around 48 hours before the January 9 edition of SmackDown when it was decided McIntyre would win the WWE Title from Rhodes on that show.

Around the same time, according to Meltzer, McIntyre was reportedly vocal about him winning the WWE Title being the best thing for all concerned for the build to WrestleMania. Cody Rhodes agreed with that sentiment as he believed it would be fresher for him to be chasing the WWE Title heading into Mania, rather than defending the belt.
