MJF as the new CMLL Light Heavyweight Champion

MJF’s venture into CMLL this weekend has seen the AEW star achieve some title success, as he is the brand new CMLL Light Heavyweight Champion after defeating former champion Averno to pick up the gold.

MJF has waged war with luchadors in recent months, having bad blood with the face of CMLL, Mistico, with MJF even stealing the icon’s mask following their match at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam Mexico in Arena Mexico. In the main event of CMLL’s Friday show, MJF hit a low blow on Averno after the referee was distracted, before locking in a half Boston crab on Averno’s already injured knee, forcing him to submit, bringing to an end his stunning 491 day reign as champion.

Following the match, MJF was confronted by Zandokan Jr., leading a match being announced between the pair for August 15, not long before AEW’s Forbidden Door 2025 PPV, in which it is fair to suspect that MJF will be putting the CMLL Light Heavyweight Title on the line. It was reported recently that AEW and CMLL were working together to try and stop AAA and WWE poaching talent. CMLL’s recent form was also noted, with many talents reportedly very happy right now with the company’s direction.
