Buddy Matthews last wrestled in AEW all the way back at February’s AEW: Grand Slam Australia in a losing effort against Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada, before being ruled out with a long-term ankle injury. In August, it was noted that Matthews had undergone ankle surgery due to the injury failing to heal properly, with no concrete timetable on a comeback at the time. Matthews himself has provided some recent insight on his recovery.

Matthews took to his Instagram Stories this week to provide an update to fans, revealing that he is still struggling with nerve issues following his surgery a few months back;

“It’s been a long process! Still having nerve issues with a lot of numbness! But accepted that It’s gonna take time. Really thought I’d have returned to the ring by now but can only control what I can.”

It seems that Matthews’ return to AEW programming will be put on hold for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, his former tag team partner Brody King sparked a new partnership with Bandido, reigning as AEW World Tag Team Champions.
