Arena México played host to AEW as Tony Khan’s outfit brought Grand Slam to the legendary venue, with a surprising competitor on hand in the shape of The Beast Mortos.
Inter-promotional relationships in Mexico can be notoriously fraught, with bridges easily burned over seemingly the most minor of infractions. In the case of Mortos - fka Semental in CMLL - a jump to CMLL’s fierce rivals AAA in 2011 seemingly put paid to any future appearances in a CMLL ring, such is the animosity between the two lucha promotions. However, with Claudio Castagnoli unable to make the show on June 18, AEW President Tony Khan personally met with CMLL head Salvador Lutteroth Lomeli to request Mortos’ participation on the show - per a report from Fightful Select.
The meeting clearly worked, with future lawyer Mortos performing in Arena México for the first time in 14 years as he teamed with Death Riders Jon Moxley and Wheeler Yuta, and The Young Bucks in 10-man tag action against The Opps (Katsuyori Shibata, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Samoa Joe), Swerve Strickland, and Will Ospreay in Grand Slam’s main event.
