Whilst pitches have been made to turn Cody Rhodes heel, there has been strong opposition to a turn for the ‘American Nightmare’ within WWE.

Reports earlier this year claimed that The Rock strongly pushed for a Rhodes heel turn, but the decision was instead made to turn John Cena heel, with Cena attacking Rhodes at Elimination Chamber.

A new report from Fightful Select suggests that WWE had creative plans in place before WrestleMania for Rhodes to remain as a face throughout the year. After The Rock took to Pat McAfee’s show to again tease the prospect of Rhodes turning heel, some within WWE didn’t want to put a spotlight on Rock’s comments but maintained there were a number of people opposed to turning Rhodes as he is a major ticket and merchandise mover, and the current face of the entire company.

It has been many years since Rhodes last enjoyed a heel run in wrestling, with Cody famously reluctant to turn heel throughout his All Elite Wrestling run from 2019 until his exit in 2022. Cody’s last major heel run came as part of Bullet Club and The Elite prior to the formation of AEW.
