The build to Jade Cargill vs. Rhea Ripley at WWE WrestleMania 42 took a seemingly personal turn when the two engaged in a bitter exchange across social media.
Ahead of their WWE Women’s Championship match at the upcoming Mania XLII, the two engaged in a war of words on social media, with Chelsea Green and Piper Niven getting involved on Ripley’s side, seemingly suggesting that the drama may not be a work. Ripley herself suggested there was genuine animosity by stating ‘Not having fun, Not friends. Learn to work and never lie to defame someone’s real human character by “breaking the 4th wall”’.
Reports have been conflicting regarding the matter. Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer suggests it is all a work but based on real feelings about Cargill from within WWE, with Meltzer saying:
“There is a prevailing viewpoint there, among people and talent, that is, like, identical to some of the things that were tweeted. So there is...we're ribbing on the square,” said Meltzer. "It's a real interesting thing, because it is a work, because again, if it was real, they're not doing it, you know what I mean? Chelsea Green, Piper Niven, they're not going to bury someone on their own team in public, because they know you can't do this. It's not allowed. But they are using the thoughts of many people while they're doing this angle. It's really kind of...that's what (Jerry) Lawler and (Bill) Dundee used to do...where it's all work, but everything they said about each other was real, you know?”
However, a report from PWInsider suggests the exchange was not a work, with Cargill having rubbed some up the wrong way. Indeed, some are blaming Cargill for the recent public spat, with Cargill having faced criticism for how she apparently treats others in the locker-room, with the WWE Women’s Champion allegedly having history for rubbing others up the wrong way.
Alas, when the online exchange between Cargill and Ripley started, it was not difficult for other performers to want to jump in and voice their own opinions on the matter. WWE sources have suggested that WWE management may step in to de-escalate the situation, and that management may have to speak to Cargill with how she interacts with her co-workers. It is said that whilst the locker-room have been happy to do whatever to make Cargill a star, it has been felt that the respect shown has not always been reciprocated.
A source close to Cargill blew off the severity of the situation, noting that Cargill has a ‘type A personality’ and is just a highly competitive and dedicated performer who is bound to come into conflict with others due to her mindset to work.
This is the not the first time that rumours of Cargill experiencing heat within WWE have surfaced.
