Controversy emerged on Saturday night's episode of AAA TV from Mexico City, Mexico as Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) unmasked Octagon Jr. during their singles match. Instead of this resulting in a disqualification, the match continued as OG El Grande Americano applied an ankle lock, with Octagon ultimately tapping out while using his other hand to cover his face.

It has been a rule in Lucha Libre for decades that unmasking an opponent during a match results in a DQ to the point that Rey Mysterio on English commentary even questioned if the match was no DQ after Gable removed Octagon's mask.

The same rule does not apply to WWE TV, though, with wrestlers often using an unmasking to gain an advantage inside the squared circle, such as during Gunther's win over Dragon Lee on the March 2 episode of Monday Night Raw.

Speculation on social media suggested WWE may have imposed their own version of the unmasking rule on Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, abandoning years of Lucha Libre tradition in the process, but that is reportedly not the case. According to BodySlam, there was simply a miscommunication over the unmasking and the referee was supposed to call for a disqualification, but he did not do so. This would have resulted in a DQ win for Octagon Jr. over Original El Grande Americano.

The post-match angle where OG El Grande Americano moved to attack AAA interviewer Andrea Bazarte resulted in a critically acclaimed brawl between OG El Grande Americano and Ludwig Kaiser's El Grande Americano, which ended when Kaiser's Americano challenged Gable's Americano to a Mask vs. Mask Match. No date was announced for the match by Kaiser, but, in news that will surprise no one, the Mask vs. Mask Match will headline Noche de Los Grandes on May 30 in Monterrey, Mexico, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has reported.

WWE and Fillip acquired Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in 2025. The AAA creative team is composed of Konnan, Jeremy Borash, The Undertaker, and Dorian Roldan. Triple H, meanwhile, retains final say over AAA creative in his role as WWE Chief Content Officer.
