On the road to WrestleMania 42, WWE’s plans in the main event scene have been chopped up and changed numerous times. Originally, it was reported that plans for the show would see a headline match between WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and challenger Roman Reigns, though these plans were scrapped due to fears of audiences tuning out due to seeing a third Reigns/Rhodes main event at WrestleMania. Drew McIntyre would then win the WWE Championship, leading fans to assume that the WWE Title match would be between McIntyre & Rhodes at the show.
When it comes to the feeling in WWE about this match, more has been revealed by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. It is noted that WWE is wary of booking a singles match between Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes due to the fact that they’ve had many major singles matches over the last six months, both on PLE and weekly programming. There is also a belief within WWE that it is too predictable.
There has been speculation due to WWE’s recent booking that the WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 42 would become a multi-man match, though it is stated in this report that WWE’s plans to expand it would only include one other person at this point, likely Jacob Fatu, rather than anything else involving Randy Orton, Sami Zayn, Trick Williams, and beyond.
