WWE have direct ties to the world of lucha libre these days due to their impending acquisition of Mexican promotion AAA.

In recent months, AAA talent have appeared on WWE television, while the two companies jointly staged the well-received WWE x AAA Worlds Collide show in June.

While WWE are not currently pursuing any CMLL talent for their AAA-affiliated roster, they do have their eye on one particular talent. According to Cory Hays of BodySlam.net, WWE are monitoring CMLL star Mascara Dorado.

Not to be confused with the original Mascara Dorada, who wrestled for WWE as Gran Metalik, the current Mascara Dorada is a 23-year-old high-flying sensation who is considered one of the most spectacular wrestlers in the world. He is one-third of the reigning CMLL World Trios Champions as part of El Sky Team with Mistico and Neon. As well as CMLL, Dorada has competed for AEW, NJPW, MLW and various other promotions in 2025.

After news of WWE's acquisition of AAA was made public, CMLL released a statement saying, "As long as Arena México exists, Lucha Libre will never die".

Internally, CMLL were said to be keeping a close eye on the situation and are optimistic at being able to present themselves as being the purely Mexican-owned home of lucha libre.
