All the way back in 2003, Kane unmasked for the first time in one of the most shocking moments on WWE programming during that year. After years of competing under various versions of his mask, the domineering monster would lose a match to Triple H on Monday Night RAW, with the stipulation declaring that he’d finally have to remove his mask. From then on, Kane competed for many years without a mask, though he would eventually return to competing underneath it in 2011. The man himself has revealed the reason behind this change.
Speaking on the River City Wrestling Con panel, Kane was asked about the creative process that led up to such a major change in his character. The wrestler-turned-politician revealed it was his own idea.
“It was my idea. I talked to Vince about it. Vince liked it—probably not so much for the reasons from my perspective. My perspective was as a performer, and yeah, I felt that being under the mask—I don’t want to say run its course because, you know, it was a really cool character and it still worked—but there were constraints and limitations that it put on me. Obviously, the biggest one is I couldn’t use my face to show people emotion, which is one of the most important things.”
