On the back of a noteworthy episode of SmackDown that saw the return of AJ Lee and John Cena's final Chicago appearance, there are a whole bunch of rumours and reports from across the wrestling world on September 6, 2025.

AJ Styles has gotten the wrestling world talking, with a major hint towards retirement. Styles has not been quiet over the last year or so regarding the fact that he is nearing the end of his in-ring career, and his latest Instagram post has sparked more talk. Styles posted an image of an hourglass, with his logo filtering away from top to bottom, hinting that his time is running out.

Following this social media post, Fightful Select has reported that AJ Styles’ WWE contract is expiring soon, with his most recent extension ending somewhere between the 2026 Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 42 next year, possibly around February. It is noted that while Styles has talked about retirement in the past, he hasn’t outwardly discussed it recently.

It is additionally stated that WWE are hoping to retain AJ Styles beyond the end of his current deal, and are looking to evaluate his interest.

Why John Cena's Final Match Won't Be In Boston

It was revealed via reports this week that John Cena’s seemingly planned retirement in his hometown of Boston was no longer on the cards, with it being suggested that Cena’s last match would instead be held at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC on December 13 for a special episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event.

In a daily update to F4WOnline, Dave Meltzer revealed why the planned location for Cena’s retirement match has been changed, with it all coming down to money.

WWE had been looking for cities to bid to host the event, much like New Jersey did for SummerSlam. However, it is stated that Boston did not bid high enough, so WWE moved the show to Washington, DC.

Earlier this year, John Cena’s father had revealed that the plan was for Cena to retire in his hometown, but it seems as though Cena’s final appearances in Boston will now take place in November.

Chris Jericho Responds To WWE Return Rumours

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Chris Jericho has revealed he isn't opposed to a return to WWE, but he isn't going anywhere "for a while."

"The best thing that can happen in wrestling is AEW. And the fact that there's two huge promotions that you can choose from just makes it better for the guys, it makes it better for the fans, and everybody in between," Jericho said.

"So I'm not going anywhere for a while. I'm still with AEW for right now. Would I go back to WWE? I wouldn't be opposed to it. We just have to see what happens. But the best thing that can happen is that you have two great teams that you can play for, and that just makes everything bigger and more exciting."

Chris Jericho's AEW contract is due to expire at the end of 2025, and reports have noted he has made overtures to WWE to determine their interest in potentially bringing him back.

The former AEW World Champion has been a featured performer for All Elite Wrestling since the promotion was founded in 2019, but he has not appeared on TV since the post-Dynasty edition of Dynamite in April 2025.
